Private chauffeured tour

Seven days, three former royal and imperial capitals, one private driver. This itinerary takes the classic Vienna-Budapest route and extends it east into Poland — through the Hungarian Catholic heartland at Esztergom, across the Slovak Tatras to the medieval cliff castle of Orava, and on to Krakow, the medieval Polish capital and the most architecturally complete old town in Central Europe. The day at Krakow includes a visit to the Auschwitz-Birkenau Memorial, the most internationally significant site of Holocaust remembrance and an experience of considerable emotional weight.

For travellers who have one full week for Central Europe and want a journey that goes beyond the standard Habsburg circuit to include the Polish dimension, this is the right itinerary. The route arcs across four countries (Czech Republic, Austria, Hungary, Poland, with a Slovak transit) without the standard travel-day exhaustion: the driving days each include two meaningful stops, and the city days are properly paced.

At a glance

Duration: Seven days, six nights
Cities: Prague (start & finish), Vienna (2 nights), Budapest (2 nights), Krakow (2 nights)
Total driving: Approximately 1,700 km across seven days
Languages: English-speaking driver throughout
Best for: Travellers wanting more than the standard Habsburg arc; visitors with serious interest in Holocaust remembrance; visitors who want to combine imperial Central Europe with medieval Polish history
Best months: May–June and September–early October. December for Christmas markets in Vienna and Krakow is also exceptional but cold.

Day by day

Day 1: Prague → Vienna via Melk and Schönbrunn

Your driver collects you from your Prague hotel mid-morning. The drive south to Vienna is around 330 km on the D1 motorway and takes about four hours of pure driving, with two stops that turn the transfer into a tour. Melk Abbey (the great Benedictine monastery above the Danube) in late morning; lunch in the Wachau Valley; Schönbrunn Palace (the Habsburg summer residence, with the Grand Tour through forty rooms) before checking in at your Vienna hotel. See the Day 1 description in our Vienna & Budapest 5-day itinerary for the full detail.

Day 2: Vienna

A full day in the imperial capital. Morning circuit of the Inner City (Hofburg, Stephansdom, Kohlmarkt, Graben). Lunch at a traditional Viennese restaurant. Afternoon at either the Belvedere (Klimt's The Kiss) or the Kunsthistorisches Museum (the imperial paintings collection). Evening at the Vienna State Opera or the Musikverein if a performance fits your dates. See the Day 2 description in our Vienna & Budapest 5-day itinerary for the full routing, including the Spanish Riding School and Parndorf Outlet Centre alternatives.

Day 3: Vienna → Budapest via Bratislava and Pannonhalma

Check out from your Vienna hotel after breakfast. The drive to Budapest is around 240 km, three hours of pure driving, with stops at Bratislava (the Slovak capital, with 90 minutes for the medieval old town and the coronation cathedral of Saint Martin) and Pannonhalma Archabbey (the UNESCO Benedictine monastery founded in 996, the oldest in Hungary). See the Day 3 description in our Vienna & Budapest 5-day itinerary for the full routing.

Day 4: Budapest

A full day in the city, with your driver moving you between the Buda and Pest sides of the historic centre. Morning on Castle Hill (Matthias Church, Fisherman's Bastion, Royal Palace). Afternoon on the Pest side (Parliament Building, Saint Stephen's Basilica, Andrássy Avenue). Optional thermal bath (Széchenyi or Gellért) and evening Danube cruise. See the Day 4 description in our Vienna & Budapest 5-day itinerary for the full routing.

Day 5: Budapest → Krakow via Esztergom and Orava

Check out from your Budapest hotel after breakfast. The drive to Krakow is around 480 km, five and a half hours of pure driving, with two stops that span Hungary, Slovakia, and the Polish border.

First stop — Esztergom Basilica: About an hour northwest of Budapest, on the Hungarian bank of the Danube where the river forms the Slovak border. The Basilica of the Assumption of the Blessed Virgin Mary and Saint Adalbert is the largest church in Hungary and the eighteenth largest in the world — a Neo-classical monument 100 metres tall, with the third largest organ in Europe and walls 17 metres thick supporting the central dome. Built 1822–1869 on the foundations of earlier medieval churches that go back to King Saint Stephen's coronation here in the year 1000, when Esztergom was the first capital of Hungary. The Bakócz Chapel of 1506 — relocated piece by piece during the nineteenth-century rebuilding — is one of the rare Renaissance survivals in Hungary. Allow about 75 minutes for the visit; the dome climb of 400 steps adds another 30 minutes for the panoramic view across the Danube to Slovakia.

Lunch in Esztergom or across the border in Štúrovo on the Slovak side.

Second stop — Orava Castle: The medieval cliff castle on a 112-metre limestone spur above the Orava River in northern Slovakia, about three hours' drive from Esztergom across the Tatras. Built originally as a wooden fortification after the Mongol invasion of 1241; rebuilt over the following centuries into the three-level Romanesque, Gothic, Renaissance, and Neo-Gothic stone complex you see today. Internationally known as the filming location for Count Orlok's Transylvanian castle in F. W. Murnau's 1922 silent horror film Nosferatu. The guided tour takes about an hour and forty-five minutes and involves a meaningful climb on stone steps up through the three castle levels. If time runs short, the exterior alone — visible from the village of Oravský Podzámok below — gives one of the most striking castle silhouettes in Central Europe.

Check-in at your Krakow hotel by mid-evening. About 90 minutes from Orava to Krakow on quiet country roads through the Polish Tatra foothills.

Day 6: Krakow and the Auschwitz-Birkenau Memorial

This is the journey's most demanding day, both for the volume of what it covers and for the emotional weight of the Auschwitz-Birkenau visit. We strongly recommend starting early.

Morning — Auschwitz-Birkenau: About 70 km west of Krakow, an hour by road. The memorial is operated by the Polish state as the Auschwitz-Birkenau Memorial and Museum and is one of the most internationally significant Holocaust remembrance sites. Entry is free for individual visitors, but advance online booking is mandatory (since March 2026 there are no on-site sales), and we strongly recommend the official guided tour for individual visitors, which takes 3 hours 45 minutes and covers both the Auschwitz I camp (museum exhibitions, gas chamber, crematorium) and the Auschwitz II–Birkenau site (the much larger extermination camp). Our customer support team handles the booking; please confirm your dates with us at least one month in advance, as guided slots sell out quickly. The headset system on the official tour is clear and respectful; this is the right way to experience the site for a first visit.

Practical notes for the Auschwitz visit: maximum bag size 35×25×15 cm (larger luggage must stay in the car); arrive thirty minutes before your booked tour for security; dress conservatively; photography is permitted but quietly. The shuttle between the Auschwitz I and Birkenau sites is included in the guided tour.

Lunch on the drive back to Krakow. The remainder of the afternoon is shorter than a normal city day, both because of the time required by Auschwitz and because most visitors prefer a quieter pace after the morning.

Afternoon — Krakow Old Town: A walking circuit of the historic centre, which has been a UNESCO World Heritage site since 1978 (one of the first twelve sites listed worldwide). The Rynek Główny (Main Market Square) is one of the largest medieval squares in Europe, with the Renaissance Cloth Hall (Sukiennice) at its centre. Saint Mary's Basilica on the corner is famous for the Veit Stoss high altarpiece (1477–1489), the largest Gothic altarpiece in the world, and for the hejnał — the bugle call sounded from the basilica's higher tower every hour, ending mid-note in commemoration of the medieval bugler killed by a Tartar arrow. Wawel Hill (the royal castle and cathedral) anchors the southern end of the old town; the cathedral was the coronation church of Polish kings from 1320 until 1734.

Most of our guests skip Wawel's interior tours in favour of more time at the Rynek and the surrounding streets, given the weight of the morning. If you have the energy, the cathedral interior alone is worth a quick 30 minutes.

Evening in Krakow. Dinner in one of the cellar restaurants around the Rynek; we recommend something traditionally Polish (pierogi, żurek, sausage) rather than ambitious modern dining on this particular evening.

Day 7: Krakow → Prague via Olomouc and Kutná Hora

Check out from your Krakow hotel after breakfast. The drive back to Prague is around 530 km, six hours of pure driving, with two stops in Moravia.

First stop — Olomouc: The sixth-largest Czech city and the historical co-capital of Moravia, about three hours from Krakow on the D1 motorway. The historic centre is one of the best-preserved Baroque urban ensembles in the country, anchored by the Holy Trinity Column on the Upper Square — a 35-metre Baroque sculptural monument from 1716–1754, the largest single Baroque sculpture group in Central Europe, with a small chapel inside its base, listed as a UNESCO World Heritage site in 2000. The medieval Town Hall, the Astronomical Clock, the cathedral, and the Palacký University (the second-oldest in the Czech lands, founded 1573) make Olomouc a genuinely substantial small city stop. About 90 minutes for the historic centre and the column, with lunch on the Upper or Lower Square.

Second stop — Kutná Hora: The medieval silver-mining city — Saint Barbara's Cathedral and the Sedlec Ossuary. About 90 minutes for both. See our Kutná Hora day trip for the full background.

Drop-off at your Prague hotel in the early evening. End of the journey.

Recommended hotel categories

DriveCzech does not arrange accommodation, but we work regularly with guests at the major five-star and luxury boutique properties in each city.

In Vienna the Inner City near the Hofburg, the Ringstrasse, or the Burggarten / Albertinaplatz district are the most popular.

In Budapest our guests divide between Pest-side hotels along the Danube (with the famous river views) and Buda-side properties on the castle hill.

In Krakow the historic Old Town within the medieval walls, particularly the area immediately around the Rynek Główny, has the most luxury hotel options. Several restored palace and town-house hotels on or near the square operate at international five-star standard. Hotels in Kazimierz (the historic Jewish quarter) are also worth considering for a different atmosphere.

Practical notes

Currencies: Czech crowns (CZK) in Prague and Czech stops; euros (EUR) in Vienna and Bratislava; Hungarian forints (HUF) in Budapest and Esztergom; Polish złoty (PLN) in Krakow and at the Auschwitz-Birkenau Memorial. Cards work essentially everywhere.
Borders: The entire route is within the Schengen Area. No passport checks; the car simply drives through.
Languages: Your driver speaks English. English is widely spoken in hotels, restaurants, and major attractions in all three cities.
Auschwitz-Birkenau: Booking through visit.auschwitz.org is mandatory from March 2026; no tickets sold on site. Guided tours for individuals sell out one month in advance in peak season. Our customer support team handles the booking with your confirmed dates.
Dress at Auschwitz: Conservative and respectful. No bright colours, no logo-heavy clothing, no shorts. Sturdy walking shoes — both sites involve significant walking on gravel and grass.
Dress generally: Smart-casual works almost everywhere. Vienna restaurants on the higher end are more formal than equivalent Prague or Budapest places; a jacket for men at dinner is normal in better restaurants.
Krakow weather: Slightly cooler than Vienna or Budapest at any time of year; layers are useful.
Two-night Krakow as a longer alternative: Visitors who want to do justice to both Auschwitz-Birkenau and Krakow can extend to two full days in the city, doing the memorial on one day and the Old Town on another, with optional add-ons such as the Wieliczka Salt Mine (UNESCO listed since 1978) or the Schindler's Factory Museum in Podgórze. Ask our customer support team about the eight-day extended version of this itinerary.
Vehicle: Mercedes S-Class for two guests with moderate luggage; Mercedes V-Class for larger parties or for guests with significant luggage.

Why DriveCzech

This is the journey where the cross-border logistics make the biggest practical difference. Four countries, four currencies, three border crossings, and one of the most emotionally weighty visits in Central Europe make the standard self-drive option genuinely difficult to manage well. A coach tour solves none of those problems and adds its own — rigid schedules at Auschwitz, missed connections at Esztergom and Orava, fixed lunch stops. With DriveCzech the schedule flexes to your energy, the timing avoids the worst of the crowds at each stop, and the comfort of the Mercedes between locations means you arrive at Auschwitz-Birkenau in the right physical state to give the visit the attention it deserves.

We have built routes like this for guests of the leading five-star hotels in Prague for nine years, with the Liftago group since 2025. Discretion and comfort come standard.

To begin planning, send your dates to our customer support team on WhatsApp at +420 603 427 002 or use the booking form on this site. Please allow at least four weeks' notice for peak-season travel, given the Auschwitz-Birkenau booking timeline.

About the destinations

Esztergom and the Hungarian Catholic heartland

Esztergom was the first capital of Hungary — the seat of King Saint Stephen, the Magyar leader who took the Latin Christian baptism around 996 and the royal crown from Pope Sylvester II in the year 1000, founding the Kingdom of Hungary on the Western Christian rather than the Byzantine model. Stephen's coronation here, and the establishment of the archbishopric of Esztergom in 1001, made the small town on the Danube the religious centre of Hungary for the next thousand years. The royal capital moved to Buda in the thirteenth century, but Esztergom retained the archbishop's seat and the spiritual primacy that the present basilica monumentalises.

The current basilica is the third great church on the site, replacing earlier buildings destroyed in the Ottoman occupation. Construction took nearly five decades (1822–1869) and produced the largest church in Hungary, the tallest building in the country, and one of the most distinctive Neo-classical monuments in Central Europe. The Bakócz Chapel — the only major Hungarian Renaissance interior to survive the Ottoman wars — was carefully dismantled and rebuilt inside the new basilica during construction, an unusual case of nineteenth-century historical preservation.

Orava and the Slovak castles

Orava Castle stands on a 112-metre limestone cliff above the Orava River in the foothills of the Western Tatras, in what is today the north of Slovakia. The site was first fortified in the thirteenth century after the Mongol invasion of 1241 forced the medieval Hungarian kingdom to rebuild its frontier defences. The castle remained an active military and administrative seat until the eighteenth century, when its strategic role faded and the Thurzo and Pálffy noble families who held it gradually let it decline. A major fire in 1800 destroyed most of the interiors; restoration in the nineteenth century and again after the Second World War created the present castle museum.

The international fame of Orava Castle dates from 1922, when F. W. Murnau's German Expressionist film Nosferatu, eine Symphonie des Grauens used the castle as the exterior of Count Orlok's Transylvanian residence — the first significant vampire film and a foundational work of horror cinema. Murnau filmed at Orava because he could not find a German castle with the right silhouette, and the image of Orava on its cliff has been a visual reference for cinematic vampire architecture ever since.

Krakow

Krakow was the capital of Poland from 1038 until 1596, when King Sigismund III Vasa moved the royal residence to Warsaw. The medieval coronation tradition continued at Wawel Cathedral until 1734, and the Wawel hill remained the symbolic heart of the Polish nation through the partitions, the world wars, and the communist period. The 1978 UNESCO listing of the historic centre — one of the first twelve sites listed worldwide — recognised both the architectural completeness of the medieval city and its symbolic centrality to Polish identity.

The Rynek Główny was laid out in 1257 under the Magdeburg town law and remains, at roughly 200 metres on each side, one of the largest medieval squares in Europe. The surrounding old town survives substantially unaltered from its early Renaissance form. UNESCO's listing notes the city's "exceptional value" both as a working European urban centre and as one of the most architecturally complete medieval cities in Europe. Krakow today is a city of around 780,000 people, with a vigorous university tradition (the Jagiellonian University, founded 1364, is one of the oldest universities north of the Alps) and a particularly lively cultural calendar.

Auschwitz-Birkenau

The Auschwitz concentration camp was established by Nazi Germany in 1940 in Oświęcim (German: Auschwitz), a Polish town annexed into the Reich after the 1939 invasion. The Auschwitz I camp was the original site; Auschwitz II–Birkenau, three kilometres away, was constructed in 1941 as the much larger extermination camp where the majority of the killings took place. Between 1940 and the camp's liberation by the Red Army on 27 January 1945, approximately 1.1 million people were murdered at Auschwitz, the great majority of them Jewish men, women, and children deported from across Nazi-occupied Europe. The camp is the largest single site of the Holocaust and one of the most important Holocaust memorial sites in the world; UNESCO listed it as a World Heritage site in 1979 specifically as a monument to genocide and a warning against its recurrence.

The site today is administered as the Auschwitz-Birkenau Memorial and Museum by the Polish state. The preservation philosophy is one of authentic remembrance: the camp buildings are maintained substantially as they were at liberation, with the personal possessions of the murdered (suitcases, shoes, eyeglasses, prosthetic limbs) preserved in conditions that allow them to be seen as evidence rather than as exhibition. A visit is genuinely difficult emotionally and intellectually; it is also widely regarded as one of the most important journeys an educated traveller can take in modern Europe. The site is appropriate for most adults and for older children (recommended minimum age fourteen); younger children may find it overwhelming.
