Private chauffeured tour

Five days, two great imperial capitals, one private driver. This is the shortest of our flagship multi-day journeys and the most relaxed introduction to the Central European grand tour — Prague to Vienna with stops in the Wachau Valley, then Vienna to Budapest via Bratislava, and home to Prague via the Lednice estate and Kutná Hora. The whole route runs on the southern arc of the former Habsburg empire and reads, when you look at it on a map, like a slow architectural sentence written across three countries.

For couples who have a week to spare and want to see something more substantial than a Prague city break, this is the standard recommendation. Five days is enough time to settle into each city for a proper evening, walk the morning streets without the cruise-ship crowds, and arrive at the next hotel rested rather than wrung out by airports and stations.

Day by day

Day 1: Prague → Vienna via the Wachau Valley

Your driver collects you from your Prague hotel mid-morning. The drive south to Vienna is around 330 km on the D1 motorway and takes about four hours of pure driving — but the route via Melk Abbey is the right way to do it, adding roughly an hour for a stop at one of the most spectacular Baroque monasteries in Europe.

First stop — Melk Abbey: A working Benedictine monastery founded in 1089 on a rocky bluff above the Danube, rebuilt in the early eighteenth century into the Baroque masterpiece you see today. The library, the marble hall, and the abbey church are among the finest interiors of their period in central Europe. Allow about 90 minutes for the tour and another 30 minutes for the panoramic terrace.

Lunch in the village of Melk below the abbey, or at one of the wine taverns along the Wachau valley road as you continue toward Vienna.

Second stop — Schönbrunn Palace: The Habsburg summer residence on the western edge of Vienna, with 1,441 rooms, the Great Gallery where Mozart performed for the imperial family at age six, the Mirror Room, and the formal gardens stretching back to the Gloriette. The standard Grand Tour covers forty rooms in about an hour; the Imperial Tour covers twenty-two rooms in forty minutes. We recommend the longer tour if this is your only Schönbrunn visit.

Check-in at your Vienna hotel by early evening. Dinner near the Inner City; recommendations from your driver.

Day 2: Vienna

A full day in the city. Your driver collects you in the morning and the day's itinerary flexes around your interests, but the standard rhythm is: morning walking circuit of the historic centre (Hofburg, Stephansdom, Kohlmarkt, Graben), lunch at a traditional Viennese restaurant, afternoon at either Belvedere Palace (for Klimt's The Kiss and the Austrian art collection) or the Kunsthistorisches Museum (for the imperial paintings collection).

Alternative afternoon options:

Spanish Riding School — morning training sessions on most weekdays, full Sunday performances by reservation only
Vienna State Opera — for a guided tour, or to collect tickets for the evening performance
Parndorf Outlet Centre — about 45 minutes east of Vienna, for designer shopping at outlet prices. Many of our American guests build a half-day around this.
Vienna Christmas markets (late November through 23 December) — the Rathaus, Schönbrunn, Belvedere, and Karlsplatz markets each have their own atmosphere; see our Christmas markets guide

Late afternoon free time for shopping or rest. Your driver remains available through the evening if you would like to be taken to and from dinner.

Day 3: Vienna → Budapest via Bratislava and Pannonhalma

Check out from your Vienna hotel after breakfast. The drive to Budapest is around 240 km and takes about three hours of pure driving, but the route via Bratislava and the Pannonhalma Archabbey adds two genuinely worthwhile stops.

First stop — Bratislava: The capital of Slovakia, an hour east of Vienna along the Danube. The old town is compact and walkable — Bratislava Castle on the hill, the Renaissance Old Town Hall, Michael's Gate, and the cathedral where eleven Hungarian kings were crowned during the Ottoman occupation of Hungary. About 90 minutes is enough for a meaningful walk through the centre with a coffee stop.

Lunch in Bratislava or on the Hungarian side of the border.

Second stop — Pannonhalma Archabbey: A UNESCO World Heritage Benedictine monastery founded in 996, the oldest in Hungary, set on a hill above the rolling countryside of the Pannonia region. The basilica, the library, and the cloister are all open to visitors. About an hour for the standard tour.

Check-in at your Budapest hotel by early evening. Most of our guests choose hotels on the Pest side near the Danube (with views across to the Buda Castle hill) or on the Buda hill itself.

Day 4: Budapest

A full day in the city, with your driver moving you between the two halves of the historic centre — Pest (the flat eastern side, with Parliament, the Jewish Quarter, and Andrássy Avenue) and Buda (the hill on the western side, with the Castle, the Fisherman's Bastion, and Matthias Church).

Standard rhythm:

Morning: The Buda side — Castle Hill, Matthias Church (where Habsburg coronations took place from 1867 onward), and the Fisherman's Bastion with its panoramic views across the Danube to the Hungarian Parliament
Lunch: A traditional Hungarian restaurant either in the Castle district or on the Pest side
Afternoon: The Pest side — Parliament Building (interior tours by reservation; the building's exterior is one of the great landmarks of the Danube), the Saint Stephen's Basilica, and Andrássy Avenue toward Heroes' Square
Optional add: A traditional thermal bath visit — the Széchenyi Baths in the City Park, or the Gellért Baths in their Art Nouveau setting on the Buda side. Budapest is one of the great spa cities of Europe and skipping it entirely is a missed opportunity for many visitors.

Evening: Many of our guests take a Danube dinner cruise; we are happy to coordinate. Or simply dinner at a high-end Hungarian restaurant — the city has several Michelin-starred options.

Day 5: Budapest → Prague via Lednice and Kutná Hora

Check out from your Budapest hotel after breakfast. The drive back to Prague is the longest single transfer of the trip — around 530 km, six hours of pure driving — so we keep the stops short and structured for energy.

First stop — Lednice Chateau: The Liechtenstein family's Neo-Gothic summer residence in southern Moravia, set in the UNESCO-listed Lednice-Valtice cultural landscape. The exterior alone is one of the most photographed in Central Europe; the gardens and the minaret folly are open without an interior ticket. About an hour.

Lunch in the village of Lednice or at the nearby Valtice estate, with its excellent local wine.

Second stop — Kutná Hora: The medieval silver-mining city that funded the Bohemian crown. Saint Barbara's Cathedral and the Sedlec Ossuary are the two essentials. About 90 minutes for both with the brief drive between them.

Drop-off at your Prague hotel in the early evening. End of the journey.

Recommended hotel categories

DriveCzech is a private transport service, not a travel agency, and we do not arrange your accommodation. We do, however, work regularly with guests at the major five-star and luxury boutique properties in both cities, and we are happy to share a recommendations list with options at different price points when you book your trip.

In Vienna our guests most often stay in the Inner City near the Hofburg or on the Ringstrasse. The classic palace hotels in the Burggarten / Albertinaplatz district remain our most frequent drop-offs.

In Budapest our guests divide roughly equally between Pest-side hotels along the Danube (with the famous river views) and Buda-side properties on the castle hill (with quieter mornings and the historic district at your doorstep). Both work well; the choice is preference.

If you would like specific recommendations matched to your preferences — view, location, restaurant access, spa — mention it when you contact us on WhatsApp at +420 603 427 002 and we will share a tailored shortlist.

Practical notes

Currency: Czech crowns (CZK) in Prague and Kutná Hora; euros (EUR) in Vienna and Bratislava; Hungarian forints (HUF) in Budapest. Cards work essentially everywhere. See our currency guide.
Languages: Your driver speaks English. In each city, English is widely spoken in hotels, restaurants, and major attractions.
Borders: The entire route is within the Schengen Area. No passport checks; the car simply drives through.
Dress: Smart-casual works almost everywhere. Vienna restaurants on the higher end are more formal than Prague or Budapest; men sometimes wear jackets at dinner. Walking shoes essential for the cobblestone districts.
Tipping: See our tipping guide for the local norms in each country.
Best months: May to early June and September to mid-October are the most comfortable weather and lightest crowds. July and August are hot and busy; December is atmospheric (Christmas markets) but cold and dark.
Vehicle: Mercedes S-Class for two guests with moderate luggage; Mercedes V-Class for larger parties or for guests with significant luggage.

Why DriveCzech

The Vienna-Budapest itinerary can be done by train in considerably less time and at a fraction of the price, but it cannot be done with stops in the Wachau, Bratislava, Pannonhalma, Lednice, and Kutná Hora — those are private-driver routes only. With DriveCzech, the journey itself becomes the experience rather than the gap between the experiences. Door to door, hotel to hotel, with the same English-speaking driver and the same comfortable car throughout. We have built routes like this one for guests of the leading five-star hotels in Prague for nine years, with the Liftago group since 2025. Discretion and comfort come standard.

To begin planning, send your dates to our customer support team on WhatsApp at +420 603 427 002 or use the booking form on this site. We typically reply within an hour with a draft itinerary, hotel recommendations, and a confirmed price.

About the destinations

Vienna

For five centuries Vienna was the capital of the Habsburg empire and the political centre of Central Europe. The Habsburgs ruled from the Hofburg in the heart of the Inner City from 1273 until 1918 — over six hundred years of nearly continuous rule by a single dynasty, the longest in modern European history. The architectural result is a city built layer on layer in the styles of every European period from Gothic through Baroque, Biedermeier, and the Ringstrasse historicism of the late nineteenth century. The Belvedere, Schönbrunn, the Kunsthistorisches Museum, the Vienna State Opera, the Albertina — these are not isolated landmarks but the working capital of an empire that briefly governed half of Europe.

Vienna today is a city of around two million people that has kept the architectural scale and the cultural rhythm of the imperial period without the imperial politics. It is the only world capital that can plausibly claim to be both a working modern city and a museum to its own past — which is part of why UNESCO listed the historic centre as a World Heritage site in 2001.

Budapest

Budapest is the youngest of the three Central European capitals on this trip — the modern city dates from the 1873 merger of Buda (the medieval royal capital on the western bank of the Danube) and Pest (the commercial Hungarian town on the eastern bank). The merger came in the middle of a forty-year period of explosive growth under the Austro-Hungarian compromise of 1867, during which Budapest doubled in size, built its great public buildings (Parliament, Saint Stephen's Basilica, the Opera House, Heroes' Square), and emerged as the second capital of the Habsburg empire alongside Vienna.

The result is a city that has the architectural confidence of late-nineteenth-century European capitals — the same period as Hausmannian Paris or the Vienna Ringstrasse — at a scale that allows the Danube to remain its central feature rather than its edge. The Chain Bridge, the Parliament, the Castle, and the river together produce one of the most photographed urban panoramas in Europe.

Bratislava

A small capital with a complicated past. The Slovak capital today has about 430,000 inhabitants, but as Pressburg in the Habsburg period it served as the capital of the Hungarian kingdom for almost three hundred years (1536 to 1783), when Buda was under Ottoman occupation. Eleven Hungarian kings — including Maria Theresa in 1741 — were crowned in the cathedral of Saint Martin. The old town has been carefully restored in the post-communist years and the riverside has been redeveloped, but the city retains the slightly melancholy small-capital atmosphere that travellers familiar with the larger Central European cities tend to find quite restful.
