Private chauffeured tour

Ten days, four former royal and imperial capitals, one private driver. This is the most comprehensive of our Central European journeys — the route that combines the full Habsburg cultural arc (Salzburg, Vienna, Budapest) with the medieval Polish capital at Krakow and the most internationally significant Holocaust remembrance site at Auschwitz-Birkenau. Each city receives the time it deserves; the transfer days take in Český Krumlov, Melk Abbey, Bratislava, Pannonhalma, Esztergom, Orava Castle, and Olomouc as natural stops along the route.

For travellers who have ten days to two weeks for Central Europe and want a journey that covers the full cultural and historical range of the region — Baroque Austria, Renaissance Hungary, medieval Poland, and the twentieth-century memory that ties them all together — this is the right itinerary. It is the longest and most demanding flagship route we offer; it is also the one our most thoroughly travelled guests recommend most strongly to their friends.

Day by day

Day 1: Prague → Salzburg via Karlštejn and Český Krumlov

Your driver collects you mid-morning. The drive south is around 470 km with two stops — Karlštejn Castle (the Gothic royal castle founded by Charles IV in 1348) about 40 km southwest of Prague, then Český Krumlov (UNESCO World Heritage town, the second most visited place in the Czech Republic). About six hours of pure driving total. See the Day 1 description in our Salzburg & Vienna 6-day itinerary for the full detail. Check-in at your Salzburg hotel by early evening.

Day 2: Salzburg

A full day in the city. Morning circuit of the historic centre (Mozartplatz, the cathedral, the Festung Hohensalzburg, Getreidegasse with Mozarts Geburtshaus). Afternoon Sound of Music locations within the city walls — Mirabell Gardens, Schloss Leopoldskron, Hellbrunn Palace and the Pavilion, Nonnberg Abbey. See the Day 2 description in our Salzburg & Vienna 6-day itinerary for the detailed walking route.

Day 3: The Salzkammergut — Hallstatt and the Wolfgangsee

The lakes-and-mountains day. Hallstatt (UNESCO village, world's oldest documented salt mine) in the morning; Wolfgangsee with the Schafberg cog railway in good weather in the afternoon; the Sound of Music meadow above the Wolfgangsee. See the Day 3 description in our Salzburg & Vienna 6-day itinerary for the full routing and weather alternatives.

Day 4: Salzburg → Vienna via Melk Abbey

Check out from your Salzburg hotel after breakfast. The drive to Vienna is around 300 km, four hours of pure driving, via Melk Abbey on the Wachau Valley route. Lunch in Melk or along the wine road. Optional afternoon arrival at Schönbrunn if time permits, or direct to your Vienna hotel with Schönbrunn deferred to Day 5. See the Day 4 description in our Salzburg, Vienna & Budapest 8-day itinerary for the full routing.

Day 5: Vienna

A full day in the imperial capital. Morning at Schönbrunn (if not visited on Day 4) or the Hofburg complex. Lunch in the Inner City. Afternoon at the Belvedere or the Kunsthistorisches Museum. Evening at the Vienna State Opera or the Musikverein if a performance fits your dates. See the Day 5 description in our Salzburg & Vienna 6-day itinerary for the full Vienna routing.

Day 6: Vienna → Budapest via Bratislava and Pannonhalma

Check out from your Vienna hotel after breakfast. The drive to Budapest is around 240 km, three hours of pure driving, with stops at Bratislava (the Slovak capital, with 90 minutes for the medieval old town and the coronation cathedral of Saint Martin) and Pannonhalma Archabbey (the UNESCO Benedictine monastery founded in 996, the oldest in Hungary). See the Day 3 description in our Vienna & Budapest 5-day itinerary for the full routing.

Day 7: Budapest

A full day in the city. Morning on Castle Hill (Matthias Church, Fisherman's Bastion). Afternoon on the Pest side (Parliament Building, Saint Stephen's Basilica, Andrássy Avenue). Optional thermal bath visit. See the Day 4 description in our Vienna & Budapest 5-day itinerary for the full routing.

Day 8: Budapest → Krakow via Esztergom and Orava

Check out from your Budapest hotel after breakfast. The drive to Krakow is around 480 km, five and a half hours of pure driving, with two stops that span Hungary, Slovakia, and the Polish border.

First stop — Esztergom Basilica: The largest church in Hungary and the eighteenth largest in the world. Built 1822–1869 on the foundations of earlier medieval churches that go back to King Saint Stephen's coronation in the year 1000, when Esztergom was the first capital of Hungary. The Bakócz Chapel of 1506 is one of the rare Renaissance survivals in Hungary. Allow about 75 minutes; the dome climb adds another 30 minutes for the panoramic view across the Danube to Slovakia.

Lunch in Esztergom or across the border in Štúrovo on the Slovak side.

Second stop — Orava Castle: The medieval cliff castle on a 112-metre limestone spur above the Orava River in northern Slovakia. Built originally as a wooden fortification after the Mongol invasion of 1241. Internationally known as the filming location for Count Orlok's Transylvanian castle in F. W. Murnau's 1922 Nosferatu. The guided tour takes about an hour and forty-five minutes.

Check-in at your Krakow hotel by mid-evening. See the Day 5 description in our Vienna, Budapest & Krakow 7-day itinerary for the full background on Esztergom and Orava.

Day 9: Krakow and the Auschwitz-Birkenau Memorial

The journey's most demanding day, both for what it covers and for the emotional weight of the Auschwitz-Birkenau visit. We strongly recommend starting early.

Morning — Auschwitz-Birkenau: About 70 km west of Krakow, an hour by road. Entry is free for individual visitors, but advance online booking is mandatory (since March 2026 no on-site sales), and we strongly recommend the official guided tour for individual visitors, which takes 3 hours 45 minutes and covers both the Auschwitz I camp and the Auschwitz II–Birkenau site. Our customer support team handles the booking with at least one month's notice for peak season.

Lunch on the drive back to Krakow.

Afternoon — Krakow Old Town: A walking circuit of the UNESCO historic centre — the Rynek Główny (one of the largest medieval squares in Europe), the Renaissance Cloth Hall, Saint Mary's Basilica with the Veit Stoss altarpiece, and Wawel Hill with the royal castle and cathedral.

See the Day 6 description in our Vienna, Budapest & Krakow 7-day itinerary for the full routing, the Auschwitz visiting rules, and dress recommendations.

Day 10: Krakow → Prague via Olomouc and Kutná Hora

Check out from your Krakow hotel after breakfast. The drive back to Prague is around 530 km, six hours of pure driving, with two stops in Moravia. Olomouc (the sixth-largest Czech city, with the UNESCO Holy Trinity Column and the historical co-capital status in Moravia) for 90 minutes in late morning. Lunch on the Upper or Lower Square. Kutná Hora (Saint Barbara's Cathedral and the Sedlec Ossuary) in the afternoon. See the Day 7 description in our Vienna, Budapest & Krakow 7-day itinerary for the full detail.

Drop-off at your Prague hotel in the early evening. End of the journey.

Recommended hotel categories

DriveCzech does not arrange accommodation, but we work regularly with guests at the major five-star and luxury boutique properties in each city.

In Salzburg the old town near the Mozartplatz, on the Mirabellgardens side of the river, or at Schloss Leopoldskron itself for Sound of Music travellers.

In Vienna the Inner City near the Hofburg, the Ringstrasse, or the Burggarten / Albertinaplatz district.

In Budapest Pest-side hotels along the Danube or Buda-side properties on the castle hill.

In Krakow the historic Old Town within the medieval walls, particularly the area immediately around the Rynek Główny. Several restored palace and town-house hotels on or near the square operate at international five-star standard. Hotels in Kazimierz (the historic Jewish quarter) are also worth considering for a different atmosphere.

Practical notes

Currencies: Czech crowns (CZK) in Prague and Czech stops; euros (EUR) in Salzburg, Vienna, and Bratislava; Hungarian forints (HUF) in Budapest and Esztergom; Polish złoty (PLN) in Krakow and at the Auschwitz-Birkenau Memorial. Cards work essentially everywhere.
Borders: The entire route is within the Schengen Area. No passport checks.
Languages: Your driver speaks English. English is widely spoken in hotels, restaurants, and major attractions in all four cities.
Auschwitz-Birkenau: Booking through visit.auschwitz.org is mandatory from March 2026; no tickets sold on site. Guided tours for individuals sell out one month in advance in peak season. Our customer support team handles the booking with your confirmed dates.
Dress at Auschwitz: Conservative and respectful. No bright colours, no logo-heavy clothing, no shorts. Sturdy walking shoes essential.
Salzburg Festival: Mid-July through end of August. Hotels book out months in advance.
Vienna performances: Opera and Musikverein tickets book out months ahead.
Two-night Krakow alternative: Visitors who want to do Auschwitz-Birkenau and Krakow more thoroughly can request an extended eleven-day version with two full days in Krakow, allowing time for Wawel Castle's interior tours, the Wieliczka Salt Mine (separate UNESCO site since 1978), or the Schindler's Factory Museum.
Dress generally: Smart-casual in all cities. Sturdy walking shoes essential for the Hallstatt cobbles, the Salzburg fortress paths, the Budapest Castle Hill, and the Krakow Rynek and Auschwitz grounds.
Vehicle: Mercedes S-Class for two guests with moderate luggage; Mercedes V-Class for larger parties or for guests with significant luggage.

Why DriveCzech

This is the most complex itinerary in our catalogue: ten days, five hotel changes, four border crossings (within Schengen, but the regional differences are real), four currencies, three time-sensitive Alpine excursions, and one of the most emotionally weighty visits in Central Europe. A coach tour cannot do this journey at the standard a five-star traveller would expect — the rigid scheduling, the shared coach, and the inability to flex around weather, energy, or the demands of the Auschwitz-Birkenau visit make the standard alternative genuinely unsatisfactory. With DriveCzech, the entire ten-day logistics become the driver's problem. You arrive at each hotel relaxed, with your luggage already inside; you arrive at Auschwitz-Birkenau in the right state to give the visit the attention it deserves; you skip the coach-tour parking and queue problems at Hallstatt, Neuschwanstein, and the other heavily visited sites.

We have built ten-day itineraries like this one for guests of the leading five-star hotels in Prague for nine years, with the Liftago group since 2025. Discretion and comfort come standard.

To begin planning, send your dates to our customer support team on WhatsApp at +420 603 427 002 or use the booking form on this site. Please allow at least four weeks' notice for peak-season travel, given the Auschwitz-Birkenau booking timeline.

About the destinations

The Central European cultural arc

The four cities on this trip — Salzburg, Vienna, Budapest, and Krakow — represent four distinct moments in the formation of modern Central Europe. Salzburg was a sovereign archbishopric within the Holy Roman Empire for a thousand years (798–1803), giving it the longest period of continuous ecclesiastical independence in European history. Vienna was the imperial capital of the Habsburgs from 1273 to 1918, the longest continuous reign of any modern European dynasty. Budapest, after the medieval period under Hungarian kings and the Ottoman occupation from 1541 to 1686, became the second capital of the Habsburg empire under the 1867 Compromise. Krakow was the capital of Poland from 1038 to 1596, the longest single-capital tenure in Polish history, and the symbolic centre of Polish national identity through the partitions, the world wars, and the communist period.

What unites the four is the shared cultural vocabulary of central European Catholicism — the Baroque architecture, the coffee-house tradition, the opera tradition, the late-imperial sensibility that runs through the literatures of all four cities. What distinguishes them is the political history: Habsburg loyalty in Salzburg and Vienna, ambivalence in Budapest under the dual monarchy, and the long Polish history of independence asserted against neighbours that runs through Krakow's identity and architecture.

The Auschwitz-Birkenau visit on Day 9 fits into this larger story rather than standing apart from it. The Holocaust was the catastrophic terminal event of the multi-ethnic Central European world that the four cities had together represented; Auschwitz-Birkenau is the site where that world was systematically destroyed. Travellers who have spent a week experiencing the cultural achievements of imperial Central Europe before reaching Auschwitz often describe the visit as deeper and more meaningful for the context.

Olomouc

Olomouc was the historical co-capital of Moravia and is today the sixth-largest Czech city, with a population of around 103,000. The historic centre is a particularly complete Baroque urban ensemble, anchored by the Holy Trinity Column — a 35-metre sculptural monument from 1716–1754, the largest single Baroque sculpture group in Central Europe, listed as a UNESCO World Heritage site in 2000. The city's continuous importance dates from the medieval period: Olomouc was the seat of the Moravian bishopric from 1063, of the Moravian land court for centuries, and of the second-oldest university in the Czech lands (Palacký University, founded as a Jesuit institution in 1573). The Swedish army of the Thirty Years' War occupied the city from 1642 to 1650, leaving lasting demographic and economic damage but preserving the medieval and early modern architectural fabric that the post-war Baroque rebuilding then elevated to its present form.
