Private chauffeured tour

Eight days, three great capitals of the former Habsburg empire, one private driver. This is our recommended itinerary for travellers who want the full Central European cultural arc without compromising on time in any single city. Salzburg gets three nights for the Mozart sites and the surrounding Alpine landscapes. Vienna gets two nights for the imperial city. Budapest gets two nights for the great Danube capital. The transfer days take in Český Krumlov, Melk Abbey, Bratislava, Pannonhalma, Lednice, and Kutná Hora — six additional sites that would each require a separate day trip from Prague to visit individually.

For couples who have eight to ten days for Central Europe and want to come back with the sense of having seen the region properly rather than ticked off a list, this is the standard recommendation. We have built more versions of this itinerary for guests of the Prague five-star hotels than of any other multi-day route.

At a glance

Duration: Eight days, seven nights
Cities: Prague (start & finish), Salzburg (3 nights), Vienna (2 nights), Budapest (2 nights)

Day by day

Day 1: Prague → Salzburg via Karlštejn and Český Krumlov

Your driver collects you from your Prague hotel after breakfast. The drive south to Salzburg is around 470 km and takes about six hours of pure driving, but with two stops becomes a tour rather than a transfer.

First stop — Karlštejn Castle: The Gothic royal castle founded by Charles IV in 1348, about 40 km southwest of Prague. The standard guided tour covers the historic interiors in 55 minutes; the exterior alone is one of the iconic images of the Czech lands.

Lunch en route to Krumlov.

Second stop — Český Krumlov: UNESCO World Heritage town since 1992, the second most visited place in the Czech Republic. About 90 minutes for a walk through the old town and a brief look at the castle. The drive across the Šumava into Austria then takes about two and a half hours.

Check-in at your Salzburg hotel by early evening.

Day 2: Salzburg

A full day in the city. Morning circuit of the historic centre (Mozartplatz, the cathedral, the Festung Hohensalzburg, Getreidegasse with Mozarts Geburtshaus). Afternoon Sound of Music locations within the city (Mirabell Gardens, Schloss Leopoldskron, Hellbrunn Palace and the Pavilion, Nonnberg Abbey). See the Day 2 description in our Salzburg & Vienna 6-day itinerary for the detailed walking route.

Day 3: The Salzkammergut — Hallstatt and the Wolfgangsee

The lakes-and-mountains day. Hallstatt (UNESCO village, world's oldest documented salt mine) in the morning; Wolfgangsee with the Schafberg cog railway in good weather, or Sankt Gilgen with the lake-front views in poor weather, in the afternoon; the Sound of Music meadow above the Wolfgangsee where Maria's opening sequence was filmed. See the Day 3 description in our Salzburg & Vienna 6-day itinerary for the full routing.

Day 4: Salzburg → Vienna via Melk Abbey

Check out from your Salzburg hotel after breakfast. The drive to Vienna is around 300 km, four hours of pure driving, with one major stop on the Wachau Valley route.

First stop — Melk Abbey: A working Benedictine monastery founded in 1089 on a rocky bluff above the Danube, rebuilt in the early eighteenth century into the Baroque masterpiece you see today. The library, the marble hall, and the abbey church are among the finest interiors of their period in Europe. Allow about 90 minutes for the tour and the panoramic terrace.

Lunch in the village of Melk below the abbey or at a wine tavern along the Wachau valley road.

Second stop — Schönbrunn Palace: The Habsburg summer residence on the western edge of Vienna, with 1,441 rooms, the Grand Tour covering forty rooms in about an hour, and the formal gardens stretching back to the Gloriette. Arriving directly at Schönbrunn from the route saves a separate visit later; on the other hand, you may prefer to check in at your hotel first and visit Schönbrunn on Day 5. Your driver can flex either way.

Check-in at your Vienna hotel by early evening.

Day 5: Vienna

A full day in the imperial city. Morning at Schönbrunn (if not visited on Day 4) or the Hofburg complex (Imperial Apartments, Treasury, Spanish Riding School). Lunch in the Inner City. Afternoon at the Belvedere (for Klimt's The Kiss) or the Kunsthistorisches Museum (for the imperial paintings), with the Graben and Kohlmarkt walks for the historic shopping streets. Evening at the Vienna State Opera or the Musikverein if a performance fits your dates. See the Day 5 description in our Salzburg & Vienna 6-day itinerary for the full Vienna routing and the Parndorf Outlet Centre option.

Day 6: Vienna → Budapest via Bratislava and Pannonhalma

Check out from your Vienna hotel after breakfast. The drive to Budapest is around 240 km and takes about three hours of pure driving, but the route via Bratislava and the Pannonhalma Archabbey adds two genuinely worthwhile stops.

First stop — Bratislava: The Slovak capital, an hour east of Vienna along the Danube. The old town is compact and walkable — Bratislava Castle on the hill, the Renaissance Old Town Hall, Michael's Gate, and the cathedral where eleven Hungarian kings were crowned during the Ottoman occupation of Hungary. About 90 minutes for a meaningful walk through the centre with a coffee stop.

Lunch in Bratislava or on the Hungarian side of the border.

Second stop — Pannonhalma Archabbey: The UNESCO Benedictine monastery founded in 996, the oldest in Hungary, on a hill above the rolling Pannonian countryside. The basilica, library, and cloister are open to visitors. About an hour for the tour.

Check-in at your Budapest hotel by early evening.

Day 7: Budapest

A full day in the city. Morning on the Buda side — Castle Hill, Matthias Church (where Habsburg coronations took place from 1867 onward), and the Fisherman's Bastion with panoramic views across the Danube to the Hungarian Parliament. Lunch at a traditional Hungarian restaurant. Afternoon on the Pest side — Parliament Building (interior tours by advance reservation), Saint Stephen's Basilica, Andrássy Avenue, and the State Opera House. Optional thermal bath visit (Széchenyi or Gellért) and evening Danube dinner cruise. See the Day 4 description in our Vienna & Budapest 5-day itinerary for the full routing.

Day 8: Budapest → Prague via Lednice and Kutná Hora

Check out from your Budapest hotel after breakfast. The drive back to Prague is the longest single transfer of the trip — around 530 km, six hours of pure driving — so we keep the stops short and structured for energy.

First stop — Lednice Chateau: The Liechtenstein family's Neo-Gothic summer residence in the UNESCO-listed Lednice-Valtice cultural landscape. About an hour for the gardens, the chateau exterior, and the minaret folly.

Lunch in the village of Lednice or at the nearby Valtice estate.

Second stop — Kutná Hora: The medieval silver-mining city. Saint Barbara's Cathedral and the Sedlec Ossuary. About 90 minutes for both.

Drop-off at your Prague hotel in the early evening. End of the journey.

Recommended hotel categories

DriveCzech does not arrange accommodation, but we work regularly with guests at the major five-star and luxury boutique properties in each city and are happy to share a recommendations list when you book your trip.

In Salzburg our guests most often stay in the old town near the Mozartplatz, on the Mirabellgardens side of the river, or at Schloss Leopoldskron itself (now a small hotel) for guests particularly invested in the Sound of Music experience.

In Vienna the Inner City near the Hofburg, the Ringstrasse, or the Burggarten / Albertinaplatz district are the most popular. The classic palace hotels all sit within a few hundred metres of each other in this district.

In Budapest our guests divide roughly equally between Pest-side hotels along the Danube (with the famous river views) and Buda-side properties on the castle hill (with quieter mornings and the historic district at your doorstep). Both work well; the choice is preference.

Practical notes

Currencies: Czech crowns (CZK) in Prague and Czech stops; euros (EUR) in Salzburg, Vienna, and Bratislava; Hungarian forints (HUF) in Budapest. Cards work essentially everywhere. See our currency guide.
Borders: The entire route is within the Schengen Area. No passport checks.
Languages: Your driver speaks English. English is widely spoken in hotels, restaurants, and major attractions in all three cities.
Dress: Smart-casual works almost everywhere. Vienna and Salzburg restaurants on the higher end are more formal than equivalent Prague or Budapest places; a jacket for men at dinner is normal in better restaurants. Sturdy walking shoes essential for the Hallstatt lakeside cobbles, the Salzburg fortress paths, and the Budapest Castle Hill.
Best months: May to early June and September to mid-October. July and August are hot and crowded; December (Christmas markets in all three cities) is atmospheric but cold and dark.
Salzburg Festival: Mid-July to end of August. Hotels and restaurants book out months in advance; if you want to travel during the festival, contact us by January at the latest.
Vienna performances: Opera and Musikverein tickets book out months ahead in peak season. Our customer support coordinates booking once your dates are confirmed.
Vehicle: Mercedes S-Class for two guests with moderate luggage; Mercedes V-Class for larger parties or for guests with significant luggage.

Why DriveCzech

This is the journey where the multi-city, multi-country logistics make the biggest practical difference. Trying to do Salzburg-Vienna-Budapest by train is doable but requires three border-crossing changes, two long luggage transfers, and the rigidity of a train timetable. Trying to do it by hire car requires you to drive yourself, navigate four cities and three languages, find parking at each hotel, and figure out the cross-border rental insurance and motorway vignettes. With DriveCzech, all of that becomes the driver's problem. You arrive at each hotel relaxed, with your luggage already inside; you spend the cross-border days seeing places rather than queuing at car-rental returns. We have built more versions of this exact itinerary than of any other multi-day route we offer, for guests of the leading five-star hotels in Prague for nine years. Discretion and comfort come standard.

To begin planning, send your dates to our customer support team on WhatsApp at +420 603 427 002 or use the booking form on this site. We typically reply within an hour with a draft itinerary, hotel recommendations, and a confirmed price.

About the destinations

The Habsburg cultural arc

The three cities on this trip — Salzburg, Vienna, and Budapest — all sat within the Habsburg sphere of influence for centuries and arrived at the modern era with a shared architectural and cultural vocabulary. Vienna was the imperial capital from the late thirteenth century. Salzburg was a sovereign archbishopric within the Holy Roman Empire from 798 until 1803, then folded into the Habsburg empire. Budapest, after the Habsburg recovery of Hungary from the Ottomans in 1686, became the second capital of the empire under the 1867 Compromise that created the Dual Monarchy of Austria-Hungary.

The architectural result is that all three cities speak essentially the same Baroque-Classical-Historicist visual language, with regional accents — Italian-Baroque in Salzburg, late Baroque and Ringstrasse historicism in Vienna, Hungarian historicism and Art Nouveau (called "Secession" here) in Budapest. The cultural result is shared coffee-house traditions, shared opera traditions, shared pastry traditions, and the slightly melancholy late-imperial sensibility that runs through their literatures (Joseph Roth, Stefan Zweig, Sándor Márai).

Salzburg

See the corresponding section in our Salzburg & Vienna 6-day itinerary for the full background on Salzburg's history as a sovereign archbishopric, the Mozart birthplace, and the Sound of Music connection.

Vienna

For five centuries Vienna was the capital of the Habsburg empire and the political centre of Central Europe. The Habsburgs ruled from the Hofburg in the heart of the Inner City from 1273 until 1918 — over six hundred years of nearly continuous rule by a single dynasty, the longest in modern European history. UNESCO listed the historic centre as a World Heritage site in 2001.

Budapest

Budapest is the youngest of the three capitals on this trip — the modern city dates from the 1873 merger of Buda (the medieval royal capital on the western bank of the Danube) and Pest (the commercial Hungarian town on the eastern bank). The merger came in the middle of a forty-year period of explosive growth under the Austro-Hungarian Compromise of 1867, during which Budapest doubled in size, built its great public buildings (Parliament, Saint Stephen's Basilica, the Opera House, Heroes' Square), and emerged as the second capital of the Habsburg empire alongside Vienna.

The Hungarian Parliament Building, opened in 1902, is the largest building in Hungary and one of the largest parliament buildings in the world; its Neo-Gothic facade along the Danube is the defining image of Budapest. The Castle Hill on the Buda side — separately listed by UNESCO as a World Heritage site in 1987 — preserves the medieval royal capital that the modern city grew around.
