Private chauffeured tour

Eleven days, four great Central European cities, the full Bavarian and Austrian Alpine landscapes, and one private driver. This is our most comprehensive non-Polish flagship itinerary — the route that combines the Bavarian arm (Pilsen, Regensburg, Munich, Neuschwanstein, the Zugspitze) with the full Austro-Hungarian Habsburg cultural arc (Salzburg, the Sound of Music landscapes, Hallstatt, Vienna, Budapest). For travellers who want both the dramatic Alpine landscape of Bavaria and Austria and the imperial city culture of three former Habsburg capitals, eleven days is the right length to do all of it well without compressing any single stop.

The route runs west-then-east — Prague to Munich, the Bavarian Alps, Salzburg, the Salzkammergut, Vienna, Budapest, and home through Moravia. Each city receives enough nights to settle into a hotel rhythm; the Alpine days are positioned where the driving makes sense; the long final transfer home through Lednice and Kutná Hora gives the trip a proper close on the Czech side.

At a glance

Duration: Eleven days, ten nights
Cities: Prague (start & finish), Munich (3 nights), Salzburg (3 nights), Vienna (2 nights), Budapest (2 nights)
Total driving: Approximately 2,000 km across eleven days
Languages: English-speaking driver throughout
Best for: Travellers with eleven to fourteen days who want both Alpine landscape and imperial city culture; castle and Mozart enthusiasts; serious music travellers with appetite for both the Bavarian and Habsburg traditions
Best months: May–June and September–early October. Neuschwanstein closes regularly for restoration in winter; the Zugspitze cable car runs year-round but the panoramic experience is weather-dependent. The Salzburg Festival (mid-July through end of August) is exceptional but requires advance hotel booking.

Evening at the Hofbräuhaus or one of the smaller traditional Bavarian restaurants. See the Day 2 description in our Munich & Salzburg 7-day itinerary for the full routing.

Day 3: Neuschwanstein and the Zugspitze

The Bavarian Alps day. Morning at Neuschwanstein — King Ludwig II's Disney-inspiring fantasy castle, with pre-booked tour tickets. Afternoon at the Zugspitze (Germany's highest peak at 2,962 metres) by cable car from Eibsee. Optional add: the Highline 179 suspension footbridge across the Tyrolean valley. See the Day 3 description in our Munich & Salzburg 7-day itinerary for the full detail and the weather alternatives.

Day 4: Munich → Salzburg via Herrenchiemsee and Berchtesgaden

Check out from your Munich hotel after breakfast. Herrenchiemsee Palace (the "Bavarian Versailles" on its island in the Chiemsee) in the late morning; lunch on the Chiemsee shore; Eagle's Nest (Kehlsteinhaus) above Berchtesgaden in the afternoon, weather permitting, with the Hallein Saltmine as the wet-weather alternative. See the Day 4 description in our Munich & Salzburg 7-day itinerary for the full routing.

Day 5: Salzburg

A full day in the city. Morning circuit of the historic centre (Mozartplatz, the cathedral, the Festung Hohensalzburg, Getreidegasse with Mozarts Geburtshaus). Afternoon Sound of Music locations within the city — Mirabell Gardens, Schloss Leopoldskron, Hellbrunn Palace and the Pavilion, Nonnberg Abbey. See the Day 2 description in our Salzburg & Vienna 6-day itinerary for the detailed walking route.

Day 6: The Salzkammergut — Hallstatt and the Wolfgangsee

The Alpine lakes day. Hallstatt (UNESCO village, world's oldest documented salt mine) in the morning; Wolfgangsee with the Schafberg cog railway in good weather in the afternoon; the Sound of Music meadow above the Wolfgangsee. See the Day 3 description in our Salzburg & Vienna 6-day itinerary for the full routing.

Day 7: Salzburg → Vienna via Melk Abbey

Check out from your Salzburg hotel after breakfast. The drive to Vienna is around 300 km, four hours of pure driving, via Melk Abbey on the Wachau Valley route — one of the finest Baroque monasteries in Europe, with the library, the marble hall, and the abbey church above the Danube. Lunch in Melk or along the Wachau wine road. See the Day 4 description in our Salzburg, Vienna & Budapest 8-day itinerary for the full routing.

Day 8: Vienna

A full day in the imperial capital. Morning at Schönbrunn or the Hofburg complex. Lunch in the Inner City. Afternoon at the Belvedere (Klimt's The Kiss) or the Kunsthistorisches Museum, with the Graben and Kohlmarkt walks. Evening at the Vienna State Opera or the Musikverein. See the Day 5 description in our Salzburg & Vienna 6-day itinerary for the full Vienna routing.

Day 9: Vienna → Budapest via Bratislava and Pannonhalma

Check out from your Vienna hotel after breakfast. The drive to Budapest is around 240 km, three hours of pure driving, with stops at Bratislava (the Slovak capital, with 90 minutes for the medieval old town and the coronation cathedral of Saint Martin) and Pannonhalma Archabbey (the UNESCO Benedictine monastery founded in 996, the oldest in Hungary). See the Day 3 description in our Vienna & Budapest 5-day itinerary for the full routing.

Day 10: Budapest

A full day in the city. Morning on Castle Hill (Matthias Church, Fisherman's Bastion, Royal Palace). Afternoon on the Pest side (Parliament Building, Saint Stephen's Basilica, Andrássy Avenue). Optional thermal bath (Széchenyi or Gellért) and evening Danube cruise. See the Day 4 description in our Vienna & Budapest 5-day itinerary for the full routing.

Day 11: Budapest → Prague via Lednice and Kutná Hora

Check out from your Budapest hotel after breakfast. The drive back to Prague is around 530 km, six hours of pure driving — the longest single transfer of the trip — with two stops that turn the day into a proper final experience rather than just a transfer.

First stop — Lednice Chateau: The Liechtenstein family's Neo-Gothic summer residence in southern Moravia, set in the UNESCO-listed Lednice-Valtice cultural landscape. The exterior alone is one of the most photographed in Central Europe; the gardens and the minaret folly are open without an interior ticket. About an hour for the visit.

Lunch in the village of Lednice or at the nearby Valtice estate, with its excellent local wine.

Second stop — Kutná Hora: The medieval silver-mining city that funded the Bohemian crown. Saint Barbara's Cathedral and the Sedlec Ossuary are the two essentials. About 90 minutes for both with the brief drive between them.

Drop-off at your Prague hotel in the early evening. End of the journey.

Practical notes

Currencies: Czech crowns (CZK) in Prague and Pilsen; euros (EUR) throughout Germany and Austria; Hungarian forints (HUF) in Budapest. Cards work essentially everywhere.
Borders: The entire route is within the Schengen Area. No passport checks.
Languages: Your driver speaks English. English is widely spoken at all major attractions in all four cities.
Neuschwanstein: Tickets sell out two to three weeks ahead in peak season. Our customer support team handles pre-booking with at least three weeks' notice for peak-season travel.
Zugspitze: Weather-dependent. We substitute Garmisch-Partenkirchen with the Partnachklamm gorge walk on poor mountain days.
Salzburg Festival: Mid-July through end of August. Hotels book out months in advance.
Vienna performances: Opera and Musikverein tickets book out months ahead.
Dress: Layers. The Alpine sections are significantly cooler than the cities; a fleece and a rain jacket essential even in summer. Smart-casual at city restaurants; a jacket for men at dinner in better restaurants in Vienna and Salzburg. Sturdy walking shoes essential throughout.
Final transfer day: The Budapest → Prague leg is the longest single transfer of the trip at six hours of pure driving. The two stops at Lednice and Kutná Hora break it up well, but expect a long day on the road.
Vehicle: Mercedes S-Class for two guests with moderate luggage; Mercedes V-Class for larger parties or for guests with significant luggage.

Why DriveCzech

This is the most ambitious non-Polish flagship itinerary we offer — eleven days, four hotel changes, three border crossings, and four time-sensitive Alpine excursions all in a single journey. The private-driver advantage compounds across that length: every Alpine excursion can flex around the weather, every hotel arrival is door to door with luggage already inside the car, and every city day is paced around your energy rather than around a coach schedule. The cumulative effect over eleven days is the difference between arriving at the final Budapest evening relaxed and engaged, or arriving exhausted and ready for it to end. We have built eleven-day itineraries like this one for guests of the leading five-star hotels in Prague for nine years, with the Liftago group since 2025. Discretion and comfort come standard.

To begin planning, send your dates to our customer support team on WhatsApp at +420 603 427 002 or use the booking form on this site. Please allow at least four weeks' notice for peak-season travel given the Neuschwanstein and Vienna State Opera booking timelines.

About the destinations

The Bavarian and Austro-Hungarian cultural region

The four cities on this trip share more history than the modern political borders suggest. Bavaria, Austria, and Hungary were each ruled by closely related dynasties throughout the medieval and early modern periods — the Wittelsbachs in Bavaria (1180–1918) and the Habsburgs in Austria, the Czech lands, and Hungary (1273–1918), with extensive intermarriage and political alliance between the two houses. The 1867 Austro-Hungarian Compromise made Budapest the second capital of the Habsburg empire and elevated the city to imperial standing alongside Vienna. Salzburg, sovereign archbishopric until 1803, then folded into Austria. The cultural results are visible everywhere on this trip: shared Baroque architecture, shared coffee-house traditions, shared opera and pastry traditions, and the slightly melancholy late-imperial sensibility that runs through the literatures of all four cities.
