Private chauffeured tour

Nine days, three great Central European cities, two world-famous Alpine landscapes, and one private driver. This is our most complete flagship journey — the route that combines the Bavarian itinerary (Pilsen, Regensburg, Munich, Neuschwanstein, the Zugspitze) with the Austrian one (Salzburg, the Sound of Music landscapes, Hallstatt, the Wolfgangsee, Vienna). It is the most photogenic itinerary in our catalogue and the one we recommend for travellers who have nine to twelve days for Central Europe and want both the city culture and the dramatic landscape in a single trip.

The route runs in a natural east-to-west-to-east arc — Prague to Munich, Munich to Salzburg via the Bavarian Alps, Salzburg to Vienna via Melk and the Wachau Valley, and home through Bohemia. Each city gets enough nights to settle into a hotel rhythm; the Alpine days are placed where the driving makes sense rather than as awkward detours.

At a glance

Duration: Nine days, eight nights
Cities: Prague (start & finish), Munich (3 nights), Salzburg (3 nights), Vienna (2 nights)
Total driving: Approximately 1,700 km across nine days
Languages: English-speaking driver throughout
Best for: First-time visitors to Central Europe with enough time to do the region properly; castle and Alpine landscape enthusiasts who also want imperial city culture; Sound of Music and Mozart travellers; Habsburg history travellers
Best months: May–June and September–early October. Neuschwanstein closes regularly for restoration in winter; the Zugspitze cable car runs all year but the panoramic experience is weather-dependent. The Salzburg Festival (mid-July to end of August) is exceptional but requires advance hotel booking.

Day by day

Day 1: Prague → Munich via Pilsen and Regensburg

Your driver collects you mid-morning. The drive is around 380 km with two genuinely worthwhile stops on the route — the Pilsner Urquell brewery in Pilsen and the medieval UNESCO city of Regensburg on the Danube. See the Day 1 description in our Munich & Salzburg 7-day itinerary for the full detail. Check-in at your Munich hotel by early evening.

Day 2: Munich

A full day in the Bavarian capital. Morning circuit of the historic centre (Marienplatz, the Frauenkirche, the Viktualienmarkt, the Residenz palace). Afternoon options include the BMW Welt and Olympiapark, the Pinakothek museums, the Dachau memorial, or the English Garden. Evening at the Hofbräuhaus or one of the smaller traditional Bavarian restaurants. See the Day 2 description in our Munich & Salzburg 7-day itinerary for the full routing.

Day 3: Neuschwanstein and the Zugspitze

A full day in the Bavarian Alps. Morning at Neuschwanstein — King Ludwig II's Disney-inspiring fantasy castle, with pre-booked tour tickets and the Marienbrücke footbridge for the classic photograph. Lunch in Hohenschwangau. Afternoon at the Zugspitze (Germany's highest peak at 2,962 metres) by cable car from Eibsee, or — for poor mountain weather — Garmisch-Partenkirchen with the Partnachklamm gorge walk. Optional add: the Highline 179 suspension footbridge across the Tyrolean valley. See the Day 3 description in our Munich & Salzburg 7-day itinerary for the full detail. Back at your Munich hotel by early evening.

Day 4: Munich → Salzburg via Herrenchiemsee and Berchtesgaden

Check out from your Munich hotel after breakfast. The drive to Salzburg is around 150 km, two hours of pure driving, with stops that turn the day into a proper experience. Herrenchiemsee Palace (the "Bavarian Versailles" on its island in the Chiemsee) in the late morning; lunch on the Chiemsee shore; Eagle's Nest (Kehlsteinhaus) above Berchtesgaden in the afternoon, weather permitting, with the Hallein Saltmine as the wet-weather alternative. See the Day 4 description in our Munich & Salzburg 7-day itinerary for the full routing. Check-in at your Salzburg hotel by early evening.

Day 5: Salzburg

A full day in the city. Morning circuit of the historic centre (Mozartplatz, the cathedral, the Festung Hohensalzburg, Getreidegasse with Mozarts Geburtshaus). Afternoon Sound of Music locations within the city (Mirabell Gardens, Schloss Leopoldskron, Hellbrunn Palace and the Pavilion, Nonnberg Abbey). See the Day 2 description in our Salzburg & Vienna 6-day itinerary for the detailed walking route, restaurant recommendations, and the optional Salzburg Festival timing.

Day 6: The Salzkammergut — Hallstatt and the Wolfgangsee

The Alpine lakes day. Hallstatt (UNESCO village, world's oldest documented salt mine) in the morning; Wolfgangsee with the Schafberg cog railway in good weather in the afternoon; the Sound of Music meadow above the Wolfgangsee. See the Day 3 description in our Salzburg & Vienna 6-day itinerary for the full routing and the weather alternatives.

Day 7: Salzburg → Vienna via Melk Abbey

Check out from your Salzburg hotel after breakfast. The drive to Vienna is around 300 km, four hours of pure driving, via Melk Abbey on the Wachau Valley route — one of the finest Baroque monasteries in Europe, with the library, the marble hall, and the abbey church above the Danube. Lunch in Melk or along the Wachau wine road. Afternoon arrival at Schönbrunn Palace if time allows (the Habsburg summer residence with the Grand Tour through forty rooms), or direct to your Vienna hotel with Schönbrunn deferred to Day 8. See the Day 4 description in our Salzburg, Vienna & Budapest 8-day itinerary for the full routing.

Day 8: Vienna

A full day in the imperial capital. Morning at Schönbrunn (if not visited on Day 7) or the Hofburg complex (Imperial Apartments, Treasury, Spanish Riding School). Lunch in the Inner City — Wiener Schnitzel at Figlmüller or Plachutta. Afternoon at the Belvedere (for Klimt's The Kiss) or the Kunsthistorisches Museum, with the Graben and Kohlmarkt walks. Evening at the Vienna State Opera or the Musikverein if a performance fits your dates. See the Day 5 description in our Salzburg & Vienna 6-day itinerary for the full Vienna routing and the Parndorf Outlet Centre option.

Day 9: Vienna → Prague via Hluboká and Kutná Hora

Check out from your Vienna hotel after breakfast. The drive back to Prague is around 350 km, four and a half hours of pure driving, with two stops that turn the transfer into a final day in southern Bohemia.

First stop — Hluboká Chateau: The Schwarzenberg family's Neo-Gothic chateau modelled on Windsor Castle, almost universally described as the most beautiful chateau in the Czech Republic. The exterior alone is worth the stop; the interior tour takes about 60 minutes. About 90 minutes south of Vienna.

Lunch at the chateau restaurant or in nearby České Budějovice, home of the original Budweiser Budvar brewery.

Second stop — Kutná Hora: The medieval silver-mining city — Saint Barbara's Cathedral and the Sedlec Ossuary. About 90 minutes for both.

Drop-off at your Prague hotel in the early evening. End of the journey.

Recommended hotel categories

In Munich our guests most often stay in the Altstadt around Marienplatz, in the Maxvorstadt museum quarter, or along the Promenadeplatz. The classic luxury hotels operate at international five-star standard.

In Salzburg the old town near the Mozartplatz, on the Mirabellgardens side of the river, or at Schloss Leopoldskron itself for Sound of Music travellers.

In Vienna the Inner City near the Hofburg, the Ringstrasse, or the Burggarten / Albertinaplatz district. The classic palace hotels all sit within a few hundred metres of each other.

Practical notes

Currencies: Czech crowns (CZK) in Prague and Pilsen; euros (EUR) throughout Germany and Austria. Cards work essentially everywhere.
Borders: The entire route is within the Schengen Area. No passport checks.
Languages: Your driver speaks English. English is widely spoken at all major attractions in all three cities.
Neuschwanstein: Tickets sell out two to three weeks ahead in peak season. Our customer support team handles pre-booking with at least three weeks' notice for peak-season travel.
Zugspitze: Weather-dependent. We substitute Garmisch-Partenkirchen on poor mountain days.
Salzburg Festival: Mid-July to end of August. Hotels book out months in advance.
Vienna performances: Opera and Musikverein tickets book out months ahead.
Dress: Layers. The Alpine sections are significantly cooler than the cities; a fleece and a rain jacket essential even in summer. Sturdy walking shoes for Hallstatt cobbles, the Salzburg fortress paths, and the Neuschwanstein climb.
Vehicle: Mercedes S-Class for two guests with moderate luggage; Mercedes V-Class for larger parties or for guests with significant luggage.

Why DriveCzech

This is the most complex of our multi-day itineraries — three cities, two countries (plus the Czech start and finish), four hotel changes, and four time-sensitive Alpine excursions where coordination between attraction opening hours, cable car timings, and the weather all matter. The private-driver model takes all of those logistics off your hands. Your driver knows which days to do Neuschwanstein before the Zugspitze versus after, depending on the weather forecast; knows which side of Hallstatt has the morning light and which side has the afternoon parking; knows which hotel in Vienna has the easiest car access for arrival with luggage. None of those are problems you should be solving on your own holiday, and none of them are problems a coach tour will solve at the standard you would want. We have built routes like this for guests of the leading five-star hotels in Prague for nine years, with the Liftago group since 2025. Discretion and comfort come standard.

About the destinations

The Bavarian–Austrian–Czech cultural region

The three cities on this trip share more history than the modern political borders suggest. Bavaria, Austria, and Bohemia were each ruled by closely related dynasties throughout the medieval and early modern periods — the Wittelsbachs in Bavaria (1180–1918), the Habsburgs in Austria and the Czech lands (1273–1918), with extensive intermarriage and political alliance between the two. Salzburg sat between them as a sovereign archbishopric within the Holy Roman Empire until 1803, when Napoleon dissolved it into Bavaria, then Austria.

The architectural and cultural results are visible in every city on this trip: Italian-Baroque in Salzburg, late Baroque and historicism in Vienna, Bavarian Baroque in Munich, with the shared coffee-house, opera, and pastry traditions that define the broader Central European cultural region. Travellers familiar with one of these cities tend to find the other two surprisingly legible.

Munich, Salzburg, and Vienna

See the corresponding sections in our Munich & Salzburg 7-day itinerary for the background on Munich and the Wittelsbach dynasty, on Ludwig II and the Bavarian fantasy castles, and on Salzburg's history as a sovereign archbishopric. See the Salzburg & Vienna 6-day itinerary for the corresponding background on Vienna and the Habsburg empire.

The Alpine landscape

The Bavarian Alps and the Salzkammergut share a single geological story. The northern Alpine front is a fold-and-thrust belt of limestone peaks created by the collision of the African and European plates over the past 60 million years. The lakes that ring the front — the Chiemsee, the Königssee, the Wolfgangsee, the Hallstätter See — were all carved by glaciers during the last Ice Age, then filled with meltwater. The Hallstatt salt mine has been in continuous operation for 3,500 years, making it the oldest industrial site in continuous use anywhere in Europe; the Zugspitze, at the geographic centre of the same mountain range, is the highest peak in modern Germany. UNESCO listed the Hallstatt-Dachstein cultural landscape as a World Heritage site in 1997.
