Private chauffeured tour

Seven days, two great central European cities, two world-famous Alpine landscapes, and one private driver. This is the most photogenic of our flagship journeys — the route that takes in King Ludwig II's Neuschwanstein Castle, the highest peak in Germany, the Wolfgangsee with its Sound of Music landscapes, and the UNESCO village of Hallstatt, with comfortable city days in Munich and Salzburg between the Alpine excursions.

For first-time visitors to Central Europe who want both city culture and dramatic landscape in a single trip, this is the right itinerary. Bavaria and the Salzkammergut were the original European Alpine tourism destinations in the nineteenth century, and they remain the gold standard. With a private driver, the famous queueing at Neuschwanstein, the Zugspitze cable car timing, and the Hallstatt parking situation all become someone else's problem.

At a glance

Duration: Seven days, six nights
Cities: Prague (start & finish), Munich (3 nights), Salzburg (3 nights)

Day by day

Day 1: Prague → Munich via Pilsen and Regensburg

Your driver collects you from your Prague hotel mid-morning. The drive to Munich is around 380 km, four and a half hours of pure driving, with two stops that turn the transfer day into a proper experience.

First stop — Pilsen and the Pilsner Urquell Brewery: An hour west of Prague on the D5 motorway. The brewery has been brewing the original golden lager since 1842 and is the source for two-thirds of all lagers in the world. The English-language guided tour runs for about 110 minutes and includes the historic cellars, the modern brewhouse, and a tasting of unfiltered Pilsner straight from the lagering tank. Pre-booking is essential; our customer support team handles this for you when you confirm your trip. See our Pilsner Urquell guide for full detail.

Lunch at the brewery's traditional restaurant Na Spilce, or at one of the historic restaurants in Pilsen's old town square.

Second stop — Regensburg: One of the best-preserved medieval cities in Germany, with the twelfth-century Stone Bridge across the Danube (the model for many later European medieval bridges), the Gothic Saint Peter's Cathedral, and over 1,500 listed historic buildings. UNESCO World Heritage site since 2006. About 90 minutes for a walk through the medieval centre, a coffee on the cathedral square, and a brief look at the bridge.

Check-in at your Munich hotel by early evening. Dinner at the Hofbräuhaus, a Michelin-starred restaurant, or your hotel's restaurant — we are happy to coordinate.

Day 2: Munich

A full day in the city, with your driver moving you between the historic centre, the museum quarter, and (optionally) the BMW Welt or Dachau memorial north of the centre.

Morning: The historic centre

Marienplatz — the central square with the Neo-Gothic New Town Hall (Neues Rathaus) and the famous Glockenspiel that performs at 11:00 and 12:00 (and 17:00 in summer)
Frauenkirche — the Gothic cathedral with the twin onion-domed towers that define the Munich skyline
Viktualienmarkt — the historic food market, with stalls selling Bavarian specialities, fresh produce, flowers, and the small biergarten at its centre
Residenz — the city palace of the Bavarian Wittelsbach dynasty, who ruled Bavaria from 1180 to 1918. Over 130 rooms open to the public. Allow at least 90 minutes.

Lunch at the Hofbräuhaus, Augustiner-Bräustuben, or one of the smaller traditional restaurants in the Altstadt. Munich does Bavarian food at its source; both classic and modern versions are reliable here.

Afternoon options (choose one or two):

Olympiapark and BMW Welt / BMW Museum — the 1972 Olympics complex with its remarkable tent-roof architecture by Frei Otto, plus the BMW headquarters with its driving experience and museum. About 3 hours combined.
Pinakothek museums — the Alte Pinakothek for European old masters, the Neue Pinakothek for nineteenth-century European painting, the Pinakothek der Moderne for modern art. Each one is roughly a half-day in its own right.
Dachau Concentration Camp Memorial Site — the first Nazi concentration camp, established 1933, now a memorial and museum of considerable scholarly importance. A sombre but powerful three hours, including the drive of about 30 minutes from central Munich each way. The site is run with appropriate dignity; this is genuine educational tourism rather than dark tourism.
English Garden (Englischer Garten) — one of the largest urban parks in the world, with the famous surfers riding the standing wave at the Eisbach river. A relaxed alternative to the museum-heavy options.

Evening: A traditional Bavarian dinner at a smaller restaurant outside the tourist core (we can recommend Wirtshaus in der Au or similar), or the Munich Opera if a performance fits your dates.

Day 3: Neuschwanstein and the Zugspitze

A full day in the Bavarian Alps. The drive from Munich to Neuschwanstein takes about 90 minutes; the loop through the Zugspitze region adds another two and a half hours of driving total.

Morning — Neuschwanstein Castle: King Ludwig II's hilltop fantasy castle, built 1869–1886 in deliberate medievalist style, the direct inspiration for Disney's Sleeping Beauty Castle and the most photographed castle in the world. The castle is 35 minutes' walk uphill from the parking area, or 20 minutes by horse-drawn carriage (recommended). The interior tour is strictly timed and runs about 30 minutes. Tickets must be pre-booked through our customer support team — Neuschwanstein sells out two to three weeks in advance in peak season.

The Marienbrücke footbridge across the Pöllat Gorge gives the classic photograph of the castle with the Alpsee behind it. A 10-minute walk from the castle entrance, weather permitting.

Lunch in the village of Hohenschwangau below the castles, or at the Wirtshaus zum Schluxen on the Tyrolean side of the border.

Afternoon — Zugspitze: Germany's highest mountain at 2,962 metres, reached by cable car from Eibsee in Bavaria or from Ehrwald on the Austrian side. The summit has a panoramic platform with views across four countries (Germany, Austria, Switzerland, Italy) on clear days. The cable car runs every 15 minutes from spring through autumn; in winter it serves the ski resort and continues running but the panoramic experience is weather-dependent.

Alternative for poor mountain weather: the historic Olympic town of Garmisch-Partenkirchen, with its painted facades and the gorge walk at the Partnachklamm. Less spectacular than the Zugspitze on a clear day but reliably interesting in any conditions.

Optional add: Highline 179 — the suspension footbridge across the Tyrolean valley near Reutte, 114 metres above the ground and 406 metres long. The longest pedestrian suspension bridge in the Tyrol. Genuinely spectacular and surprisingly accessible.

Back at your Munich hotel by early evening.

Day 4: Munich → Salzburg via Herrenchiemsee

Check out from your Munich hotel after breakfast. The drive to Salzburg is around 150 km, two hours of pure driving, with one major stop.

First stop — Herrenchiemsee: The "Bavarian Versailles" — King Ludwig II's enormous Baroque palace on an island in the Chiemsee, modelled directly on the central section of Versailles. The 15-minute boat ride from Prien am Chiemsee is part of the experience. The palace was never finished — Ludwig II drowned mysteriously in nearby Lake Starnberg in 1886 with construction still underway — but the completed wings (including the Hall of Mirrors, a faithful copy of Versailles') are remarkable. About two and a half hours including the boat journey and the tour.

Lunch on the Chiemsee shore or in the small Austrian border town of Salzburg-Freilassing.

Second stop — Eagle's Nest (Kehlsteinhaus), weather permitting: The mountain teahouse built by Martin Bormann as a fiftieth birthday present for Adolf Hitler, perched at 1,834 metres above Berchtesgaden. Now operating as a restaurant and historical site, with the original elevator shaft cut into the mountain. Open mid-May to late October only. The visit takes about 90 minutes and has genuine historical interest.

Alternative if Eagle's Nest is closed or impractical: Hallein Saltmine — the working salt mine that has been in operation since the medieval period, with an underground tour by mine train, wooden slides between levels, and a small underground salt lake. Open year-round.

Check-in at your Salzburg hotel by early evening.

Day 5: Salzburg

A full day in the city. The morning covers the historic centre (Mozartplatz, the cathedral, the Festung, Getreidegasse, Mozarts Geburtshaus); the afternoon covers the Sound of Music locations inside the city walls — Mirabell Gardens, Schloss Leopoldskron, Hellbrunn Palace and the Pavilion, Nonnberg Abbey. See the Day 2 description in our Salzburg & Vienna 6-day itinerary for the detailed walking route, restaurant recommendations, and the optional Salzburg Festival timing.

Day 6: The Salzkammergut — Hallstatt and the Wolfgangsee

The full Alpine lakes day. Hallstatt in the morning (the UNESCO village with the world's oldest documented salt mine), the Wolfgangsee in the afternoon (with the Schafberg cog railway in good weather), and the remaining Sound of Music locations along the way. See the Day 3 description in our Salzburg & Vienna 6-day itinerary for the detailed routing and the weather alternatives.

Day 7: Salzburg → Prague via Český Krumlov and Hluboká

Check out from your Salzburg hotel after breakfast. The drive back to Prague is around 350 km, four and a half hours of pure driving, with two stops that turn the transfer into a proper final day in southern Bohemia.

First stop — Český Krumlov: The UNESCO town with the painted castle tower, the meanders of the Vltava river, and the most complete late-Gothic / Renaissance townscape in Central Europe. About two hours for a walk through the old town, lunch in one of the riverside restaurants, and a brief look at the castle's exterior. Krumlov is about an hour and a half from the Austrian border on quiet country roads.

Second stop — Hluboká Chateau: The Schwarzenberg family's nineteenth-century Neo-Gothic chateau, designed in deliberate imitation of England's Windsor Castle and almost universally described as the most beautiful chateau in the Czech Republic. The exterior alone is worth the stop; the interior tour takes about 60 minutes if you have time. About 30 minutes north of Krumlov.

Drop-off at your Prague hotel in the early evening. End of the journey.

Recommended hotel categories

In Munich our guests most often stay in the Altstadt around Marienplatz, in the Maxvorstadt museum quarter, or along the Englischer Garten. The classic luxury options are concentrated in the Old Town and on the Promenadeplatz. Munich's smarter five-star hotels are accustomed to international guests and operate at the standard you would expect from a comparable hotel in Vienna or Zurich.

In Salzburg our guests most often stay in the old town near the Mozartplatz, on the Mirabellgardens side of the river, or at Schloss Leopoldskron itself (now a small hotel) for guests particularly invested in the Sound of Music experience. All of the major five-star properties are within ten minutes' walk of the historic centre.

Practical notes

Currency: Czech crowns (CZK) in Prague and Pilsen; euros (EUR) in Germany and Austria. Cards work essentially everywhere.
Borders: The entire route is within the Schengen Area. No passport checks.
Languages: Your driver speaks English. English is widely spoken at all major attractions.
Neuschwanstein: Tickets sell out two to three weeks ahead in peak season (June–August and December). Our customer support team handles pre-booking; please confirm your dates with at least three weeks' notice if you are travelling in peak season.
Zugspitze: Weather-dependent. On overcast or rainy days the panoramic experience is limited; we substitute Garmisch-Partenkirchen with the Partnachklamm gorge walk, or skip directly to the Highline 179 suspension bridge if weather permits.
Eagle's Nest (Kehlsteinhaus): Open mid-May to late October only. In other months we substitute the Hallein Saltmine, which operates year-round.
Dress: Layers. The Alpine sections are significantly cooler than the cities; a fleece and a rain jacket are essential even in summer. Sturdy walking shoes for Hallstatt's lakeside cobbles and the Neuschwanstein climb.
Vehicle: Mercedes S-Class for two guests with moderate luggage; Mercedes V-Class for larger parties or for guests with significant luggage.

Why DriveCzech

This is the journey where the private-driver advantage is most obvious. Neuschwanstein, the Zugspitze cable car, and Hallstatt are three of the most touristed places in Central Europe, each with its own logistical challenges: Neuschwanstein has limited daily admission and a 30-minute uphill walk from the parking area; the Zugspitze cable car runs by weather; Hallstatt's village is so small that parking has been controlled by booking system since 2024. A coach tour solves none of these problems — coach tours arrive at Hallstatt at midday with every other coach tour, queue at Neuschwanstein with every other coach tour, and have to take the Zugspitze on the day the schedule says regardless of weather. With DriveCzech, the schedule flexes to the conditions, the timing avoids the worst of the crowds, and the comfort of the Mercedes between locations means you arrive at each site rested rather than wrung out.

We have built routes like this for guests of the leading five-star hotels in Prague for nine years, with the Liftago group since 2025. Discretion and comfort come standard.

About the destinations

Munich

Munich is the capital of Bavaria, the historic seat of the Wittelsbach dynasty (1180–1918) and Germany's third-largest city by population. The Wittelsbachs ruled Bavaria for nearly 740 years, making theirs one of the longest continuous dynastic rules in European history; the architectural legacy of that long reign is concentrated in the Residenz palace complex at the heart of the historic centre. Modern Munich is associated as much with BMW and the technical industries that have made Bavaria one of Germany's wealthiest regions as with the traditional Bavarian identity; both register in the city's daily life.

The defining Munich landscape moments are Oktoberfest (mid-September to early October), the Christmas markets (late November to 24 December), and the high summer beer-garden season in the Englischer Garten and the smaller neighbourhood gardens. The city is also the gateway to the Bavarian Alps and to the southern Bavarian castle route — Neuschwanstein, Hohenschwangau, Linderhof — that gave the European Romantic movement its visual language in the nineteenth century.

Neuschwanstein and Ludwig II

King Ludwig II of Bavaria (1845–1886) is one of the most peculiar figures of the nineteenth-century European monarchies — a king who fled the political demands of his role and poured the Bavarian treasury into building three increasingly elaborate castles: Neuschwanstein (1869–onwards), Linderhof (1869–1886), and Herrenchiemsee (1878–1886). All three were unfinished at his death; all three are now among the most visited buildings in Germany. Ludwig drowned mysteriously in Lake Starnberg on 13 June 1886, three days after being declared insane by the Bavarian government — a sequence that has fed conspiracy theories ever since. Whatever the truth of his death, the castles he built are objects of genuine architectural interest: deliberate fantasies, designed to evoke medieval German legend rather than to replicate any actual medieval building, and remarkably influential on the visual language of European fantasy ever since.

Salzburg and the Salzkammergut

See the corresponding section in our Salzburg & Vienna 6-day itinerary for the full background on Salzburg's history as a sovereign archbishopric, the Mozart birthplace and the Sound of Music connection, and the salt-trade origins of the Salzkammergut.
